Oil Quality

Why Seed Moisture Matters for Oil Yield

Two mills can press the same seed on the same machine and get noticeably different results. Very often, the difference is moisture. Seed moisture affects how much oil you recover, how smoothly the press runs and how long your parts last.

Why Moisture Matters

Inside an expeller, seed is squeezed between the worm shaft and the cage bars. Moisture changes how the seed behaves under that pressure.

  • Too much moisture makes the seed soft. The press cannot build full pressure, more oil stays in the cake and the cake comes out soft.
  • Too little moisture makes the seed hard and brittle. The press works harder, temperature rises and wear increases.

The right moisture lets the seed hold together under pressure so that oil separates cleanly. Extension research on screw presses also shows that drier seed runs hotter in the press and gives a lower oil yield, so "drier" is not automatically "better".

Signs Your Moisture Is Off

  • Cake that is soft, oily or crumbly
  • Output dropping without any change in settings
  • The press running hotter or louder than usual
  • Oil that is cloudier and harder to filter

How to Manage Moisture

  1. Buy dry, well-stored seed and check samples before accepting a lot.
  2. Store seed properly in a dry, ventilated place so it does not absorb moisture.
  3. Condition the seed before pressing, so moisture is even through each batch.
  4. Keep batches consistent. Mixing very wet and very dry seed makes the press harder to control.

What the Numbers Say

A common starting point for mechanical pressing is around 7–8% moisture, and most oilseeds press best close to that range. Published guidance for individual seeds is broadly similar:

SeedTypical Pressing Moisture
Most oilseeds (general guide)about 7–8%
Rapeseed and mustardabout 6–8%
Sunflowerabout 6–7%
Copra5% or a little above

Treat these as starting points rather than fixed rules. Every machine and seed lot is a little different, so fine-tune from here and note what gives the driest, firmest cake.

Moisture in Storage

Moisture matters before the seed ever reaches the press. Oil-rich seed absorbs little water, so even a small rise can start self-heating, mould and rancidity. Storage guides for rapeseed recommend keeping seed below roughly 7–7.5% moisture and below 25°C, and warn that at around 9% the whole bulk can deteriorate quickly, with free fatty acids rising. Studies on stored groundnut show the same pattern: fungal growth and free fatty acids climb as moisture and storage time increase.

Measure, Don't Guess

A simple grain moisture meter pays for itself quickly. Check every incoming lot, and check again before pressing if seed has been stored for a while or the weather has turned humid.

Different Seeds, Different Needs

Groundnut, mustard, sesame, sunflower and cottonseed all behave differently. Each seed has its own best moisture range, and it is worth learning what works on your machine by tracking results batch by batch.

Keep a Record

Note the seed source, moisture checks, press settings and oil recovered for each batch. Over a season, these records show you exactly what gives the best yield.

We Can Help

Varsha has worked with oil processors for more than six decades. If your recovery has dropped, share your seed type and what you are seeing, and our team will help you work out the cause.

Figures in this guide are typical ranges drawn from agricultural research and extension guidance. Actual results vary with seed variety, preparation and machine settings.
