Signs Your Expeller's Worm Shaft and Cage Bars Need Replacing

3 min read

Worm shaft and cage bars of an oil expeller laid out for inspection

The worm shaft and the cage bars do the real work in an oil expeller. Together they build the pressure that separates oil from seed. As they wear, pressure falls, recovery drops and power consumption rises, often so gradually that it goes unnoticed.

Knowing the signs of wear helps you replace parts at the right time.

Why These Parts Wear

As seed is pushed along the press, the worm flights and cage bars rub against hard material for hours every day. Sand or stones left in poorly cleaned seed speed up this wear considerably. Over time, the flights become thinner and the gaps between cage bars change.

Signs Your Worm Shaft Is Worn

  • More oil left in the cake. Worn flights cannot build the same pressure.
  • Lower output at the same feed and speed.
  • Uneven or crumbly cake coming out of the press.
  • Visible wear on the edges of the worm flights when the press is opened.

The most reliable early warning is a cake oil test. A well-set full-press expeller typically leaves around 6–12% oil in the cake, depending on the seed. Test the cake when parts are new to set your own benchmark, then test again every month or two. A steady rise in residual oil, with no change in seed or settings, usually means the worm and cage are wearing.

Signs Your Cage Bars Need Attention

  • Oil draining unevenly along the cage.
  • Fine solids passing through with the oil, making filtration harder.
  • Gaps or bent bars visible during inspection.
  • Frequent blocking of the cage.

The Cost of Waiting Too Long

Running worn parts rarely saves money. You lose oil in the cake, spend more on power, put extra strain on the gearbox and bearings, and risk a sudden breakdown in the middle of a busy season.

Extend the Life of These Parts

  1. Clean seed thoroughly to remove sand and stones.
  2. Keep seed moisture in the right range.
  3. Feed the press evenly; avoid running it empty or overloaded.
  4. Inspect and measure wear on a fixed schedule.

Replace with Genuine Parts

Genuine worms, cage bars and chamber parts are made to the same dimensions as the original machine. They fit correctly, build the right pressure and wear evenly with the rest of the press.

Varsha keeps more than 1,000 spare parts for its machines. Share your machine model with our team to order the parts you need.
